On Wednesday (February 9), news broke that after nearly three years of marriage, Ashlee Simpson had filed for divorce from Pete Wentz. But even in the early stages of their courtship, Simpson and Wentz were plagued by rumors about their relationship.

Shortly after they started dating — after meeting at the MTV VMAs in 2006 — the gossip pages began speculating about the pair, who were often open about addressing the talk. In 2007 (months after they’d gone public), Simpson was preparing her next album when Wentz flatly denied he was working on new music with his girlfriend. “That’s pretty much the silliest recent rumor I have read,” he said. “Mostly [because] I want no part in selling a relationship. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz are falling out of their marriage.

Court records show Simpson filed for divorce from the Fall Out Boy bassist on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

In a joint statement, the former couple say they plan to remain friends and that their first priority is their 2-year-old son, Bronx.

Simpson cited irreconcilable differences for the breakup and is seeking physical custody of their son.

The 26-year-old singer and actress married Wentz in May 2008. Her court filings did not indicate a date for their breakup.

Wentz’s band, Fall Out Boy, said in early 2010 that is was taking a break, although the 31-year-old said at the time that the group’s breakup had been blown out of proportion.

The 31-year-old rocker – who has a two-year-old son Bronx Mowgli with wife Ashlee Simpson-Wentz – has been in “dad-land” over the last year and is looking forward to returning to work with new band Black Cards, particularly as his child is now old enough to “see the world”.

Pete said: “The great thing right now is that my family is very mobile and are able to tour with me. And I think that’s the only thing that would’ve been a hurdle. But the fact they’re kind of able to go, I want to be back out there.

“And it’s really cool to be able to see the world and to do it on a record company’s dime, so I’d like to kind of do that and I’d like to show my son the world as well.”

Pete is also taking part in a charity competition, where he leads one of four teams – with the others fronted by Run-DMC’s Reverend Run Simmons, New York Yankees star Nick Swisher and tennis ace Serena Williams – who are trying to get to Dallas for the Super Bowl in a race fuelled by tweets and the musician is happy to be raising money for a children’s charity.

He explained in an interview with website PopEater: “My charity is St. Jude’s Children Hospital. It’s really an important charity to me, especially since becoming a dad the past two years of my life now and god forbid my son ever got sick.

The son of Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz turned 2 on Nov. 20, but Ashlee says he’ll still have a nice Christmas – though they’ll have to branch out in terms of presents.

“He just had his birthday, and he got a lot of gifts,” the pop singer, 26, told PEOPLE on Monday at an Alice & Olivia toy drive in West Hollywood. “He’ll still have a great Christmas, and he’s really into Thomas the Train, but we have enough Thomas, so we do not need that this year!”

As Bronx gets older and more aware, his parents are beginning to develop family routines around the holidays. “For my husband and I, it’s nice to start those traditions now,” Ashlee says. “What we’re doing with the tree, what we did over Thanksgiving … we actually had an amazing Thanksgiving with Pete’s family.”

i saw Ashlee today in nyc and asked her about the cd and what she meant by folky

she said folky was taken out of context and the album is NOT going to be like that. she said shes been working with indie writers here and really working on the writing. its gonna be mature bc she grown up and so have we and we know what to expect from her. i asked like fiona jewel alanis she said yeah and that shes been listening to stuff like Florence and the machine as well so those should be big things for hear in her record. i asked if she was working with john again she stammered alot and said maybe. she seems really really excited about the cd and wants to get it out for the fans. i didnt ask if anything was recorded yet bc she kept saying over and over its being written right now. she said its going to be upbeat and fun of course and that she cant just stand there like how a “folk” singer would.’..she also told me to post this on the internet somewhere for her fans and i figured this was the best place.
